I like the traditional whipping the best. You have to wait for the liquid stuff to dry, and you need at least 2 coats. You can do a traditional whipping, called a common whipping, without a needle or palm in about a minute. A sailmaker's whipping takes a few more seconds, and you do have to have a needle and palm, but definitely worth it, especially in 3- strand.
