If you leave the jib halyard tight the jin or genny will indeed gather in to the forstay. Great for calm day picknics. If you leave the jib sheet tight and release the halyard the sail will go down and lay nicely on the lee rail. No more going forward in a blow to gather in the sail. A couple of ties will hold it in place.
I have been using this for at least 30 years.
